On the last day of the year I decided to forgo alcohol for a big press of coffee the next morning. I woke early and carried a bundle of canvas and paints to the top of a hill that straddled the city and the sea. Unexpectedly, I came upon a small field where one horse the color of burnt sienna stood. We drew to each other like magnets, placing foreheads together, and I breathed in her sweet scent of hay and salt air.
