About

Amanda Sandlin (b. 1989) is a painter, sculptor and writer based in Seattle.

Statement

As a personal antidote to our hurried, technologically obsessed culture, my work searches for a lost ancestral relationship with the natural world. I’m interested in the cyclical nature of everything and often merge aesthetics from historical eras like the Romantic and Victorian with a speculative, futuristic vision. I’m interested in how recalling folklore, myth, and a simpler way of being can provide tools to imagine a more harmonious future. The solitary female figures in my work are not passive bystanders, but quiet protagonists in a world where psychic connection with flora and fauna is possible. The question I continually return to in my practice is, can a painting be a portal?
