Statement

I joke that I make “sad girl” art — a playful way to describe the expressive, semi-surreal figurative paintings and ceramic forms that define my work. Beneath this lighthearted label, I investigate parts of the human psyche we often resist, such as feminine rage, grief, and the psychological shadow.

Living with a mood disorder that is cyclical in nature (premenstrual dysphoric disorder, commonly known as PMDD), the emotional extremes I experience during the month are the lens through which I make sense of my personal experience within the broader context of societal and environmental upheaval.

I draw from the aesthetics of Romanticism and the Victorian era, blending these influences with a futuristic perspective inspired by science fiction and the Solarpunk movement. This synthesis allows me to reimagine a reality where there’s a symbiotic relationship between humanity and Earth.

Bio

Amanda Sandlin is a painter, sculptor and writer based in Boulder, Colorado. Her self-study of visual art began while working as a freelance graphic artist and living nomadically for many years. She has exhibited throughout the United States and has pieces held by collectors internationally.
