A vortex is a powerful center of whirling energy that acts as a vacuum, often used in terms of air or water, but there’s symbolic significance to this idea, as well. The idea is that you go through this intense energetic experience and leave it purified, in a way. At peace. Clear-minded. In harmony.

I started working on this piece in the deep winter of 2020/21, when the pandemic loomed and the long, dark days were really starting to take their toll. I began cold plunging weekly in a canyon river just outside of town. It became a sort of Sunday ritual, like church. I would pile layers of clothing onto my body and drive up the canyon, which was often coated in a fresh layer of snow, only to strip them all off and dip into an icy river for as long as I could stand it.

Somehow, this intensive ritual kept me sane through an entire winter in lockdown and, even more, led to some sort of internal atonement and healing.
