I touched down on Australian ground and breathed in the smell of fire and flowers. For five days I explored the city and coastline, the initial thrill of something new giving way to a tender loneliness, but I kept going. I painted in museums and treated myself to tiny sugary coffees and did cartwheels through botanic gardens. It was my first time traveling alone but would be far from the last.
