In the middle of a southern winter we returned home because we didn’t know how long she would have. I cried and cried and it was good for us all to be together again. The next day we woke up and suddenly it was summer in California and it was wonderful. My tears and skin dried like the clothes on the line, getting crunchy and rich with that scent of sun and earth.
